From the Minister

Dear Friends...

What’s in a Wok?

On Sunday, January 27th, the Bristol Unitarians were delighted to welcome John Harley, our National Youth Leader, to lead worship at Frenchay, and to be part of our BRIGHT LIGHTS group in Brunswick Square in the afternoon.

Oneness and unity was the theme for the morning – and to our surprise and delight, our Turkish Muslim friends turned up during the service with a Noah’s pudding to share – expressing what we had been celebrating if you like – we are all branches of the same tree with different ways of acknowledging values which are important to us all.

In our afternoon meeting the focus was on celebrating the Chinese New Year. Although it will soon be the Year of the Rat, we made dragons…. All sorts, kindly, angry, sleepy... All made perhaps to express some aspects of our own emotions...

But we celebrated it also through creating a stir fry in the wok.

With bowls of vegetables and prawns around him, John told us about the symbolism of each vegetable and encouraged us to think of this as we made our own stir fry under the watchful eye of Sally Pugh.

We threw in ingredients to encourage growth & wealth and happiness, and to throw out anger and misery.

So my friends, whatever we rational Unitarians think about ritual and symbolism, perhaps we can rethink and call it memory joggers that help us to focus on that which we need to attend to!

Happy “ratty” New Year to you all! *

With love - Lindy

[* The Year of the Rat is a time of hard work, activity and renewal. This is a good year to begin a new job, get married, launch a product or make a fresh start.]

Women's League

On Wednesday 5th December the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress held their Christmas afternoon at the Mansion House. Sadly only 3 of us were able to attend mainly due to illness. However it was a most enjoyable occasion. The pupils of The Red Maids School serving us with tea and mince pies and entertaining us with some lovely carol singing.

Our next meeting will be on February 19th at the Harvester pub at Frenchay, meeting for lunch at 12.00 pm - following which we will hold our AGM.

Something further ahead to make a note of. The National Women’s League President, Marion Baker will lead a service at Frenchay on Easter Day, 23rd March.

Helen Brown

With great sadness we record Helen's death at Frenchay Hospital. Her funeral service, conducted by the Minister, was held at Frenchay Chapel on 18th December 2007. Family mourners included her son, Andrew and his wife, and Helen's younger sister with her two sons. Frenchay Probus Club was well represented in memory of Gordon Brown who died in 1986.

Helen's involvement with Frenchay Chapel begun in 1979/1980, when she and her husband Gordon joined with six or so other residents of Frenchay to rescue the Chapel which had not been used for Services for some sixteen years. Helen worked tirelessly but unobtrusively for the Chapel for which she formed a strong attachment as well as all it stood for. An Organ was located in a disused Methodist Chapel, and Helen paid for it to be rebuilt at Frenchay, in memory of her mother. It has been in regular use for over twenty years, and only now needs a major overhaul. Helen ran a meditation group at her home for many years. Her love of nature and photography were combined with well presented talks at the Chapel with slides in the days before laptops.

Sadly she had not felt able to attend the Chapel in recent years, but she greatly valued visits by ministers and members to the residential home for hour long conversations. She was delighted to learn of the restoration to the Chapel and that Services continued despite the tragic loss by death of two Ministers. Her contribution remains for all to see.
