Spring Gatherings

Doing church differently...

“Spring Gatherings”

An eight-week series of evening meetings.

We would like to offer a completely different experience of ‘church’ or ‘chapel’. At the centre of each meeting will be a time to explore individual life journeys and personal beliefs by sharing experiences, thoughts and questions.

Each meeting will look at a different subject, for example, Childhood memory and knowing; Generosity; Being alive; and Prayer and spiritual practice.

All meetings will be held at 7 pm on Thursday evenings
at Frenchay Chapel, Frenchay Common
on
March 5th, 19th, 26th
April 9th and 30th
May 7th, 21st and 28th.

You are welcome to come to one, two, or all of the gatherings and if you contact Lindy Latham before hand, you will receive details of the subject for each week.

Art and music for refugees

There is an all day event on Saturday 7th February, starting at 9:30 am, to raise money for refugees from war-torn countries (e.g. Gaza). People can get sponsored, or if they prefer make a donation to go along to Christchurch in the City, at the top of Broad Street (the church with the quarter-jack clock) and either play something on their instrument, sing, create some art or write a poem. It doesn't matter if they are a complete beginner in one of these fields, or have been doing it for years. The idea is that it's an opportunity to give something of themselves that will really help these desperate people. For sponsorship forms and more information about participating, people can phone Clare on 0117 947 0699.

There will be tea, coffee, cakes etc all day, and a very friendly atmosphere! Shoppers are welcome to take a break and join us. Perhaps they will be inspired to draw or write a poem of their own and make a donation.

At 6.30 there will be an exhibition of the art made throughout the day, which can also be bought to raise more money and then a concert at 7.30 which will include world music, folk, jazz/rock and classical and feature local singer/songwriters, recording artists and professional musicians. Something for everyone! One or two of the poems will also be read during the concert. The concert is free: people will simply be invited to give what they can by way of donation.

The organisers hope that as many as possible will come. It looks like being great fun, and is of course extremely worthwhile!

This is not an event affiliated to Christchurch, nor to any particular religion or perspective, and is an opportunity for people of all faiths and backgrounds to come together to do something in support a more peaceful world.

Gwen Raverat: a NeoPagan Darwin
William Pryor, writer and entrepreneur and Darwin’s great great grandson, will be talking about his grandmother, Gwen Raverat, author of the beloved memoir Period Piece, talented wood engraver and friend of Stanley Spencer, Rupert Brooke and Virginia Woolf. Growing up in Cambridge as one of the extensive Darwin clan, Gwen felt the pressures and pleasures of having a world famous grandfather.

From Darwin’s Fishes to Jenyns’ Fishes— Ichthyology and the Voyage of the Beagle
Dr Daniel Pauly, Professor of Fisheries
University of British Columbia
A look at some of the practical problems Darwin faced while fish-sampling on the Beagle and how he solved them; also the theoretical issues (besides ‘beating the French’) which Darwin hoped his fish collection would help address. The collaboration between Charles Darwin and naturalist Leonard Jenyns, leading to the publication of Fish as part of the Zoology of the Beagle, will be described, based on the published correspondence between Darwin and Jenyns.

Women's League

Five of us met at the Café Rouge for a Christmas Lunch. We enjoyed our meals, though the service could have been a little quicker.

A visit to the Tobacco Factory in January to see a production of A Christmas Carol was much enjoyed by all who went.

Our next meeting will be our AGM, to be held at UMB on Friday 13th February at 2 pm. There will be a bring and buy table, and ideas for our meetings in the year ahead will be discussed.
