WOMEN’S LEAGUE

I attended, with Peter, the Women’s League Rally which was held at Whalley Abbey, Lancashire on October 17/18th.

Joyce Thompson gave a very interesting talk on her nursing career which started in 1946, before the NHS was set up. She ended her career as Chief Nursing Officer of the Preston region, which involved setting up the new Preston hospital. I was able to sell a lot of children’s books in aid of the UK Sepsis Trust, this year’s National Women’s League Project. It was decided that ‘Smile Train’ will be the Project for 2019/20. I sold more books at the Group Harvest supper at UMB on 26th October as well craft items made by Fran Foot. We also sold jam for chapel funds.

Anne Butler will be coming to UMB on Friday 23rd November from 2 to 4 pm to help us make Christmas cards. Tea, coffee and mince pies will be served anyone dropping in up until 6 pm.

ROS PRATT - BRISTOL WOMEN’S LEAGUE PRESIDENT

On September 1st 2018 we were sad to learn that Ros Pratt, our President had died following two strokes. Many friends and relations attended her funeral at Canford Cemetery on 21st September followed by burial at Henbury Burial Ground. Afterwards a reception was held at Kings Weston House, the lovely and historic house in Shirehampton. Sally Pugh, Jane Hulin, and Susan and Peter Wildman signed the visitors book and also represented Olga Jennings and Anne Butler. Donations were made to Bristol Dogs Home.

Rosamund May Pratt had recently enjoyed her 95th birthday in Castleton, Derbyshire where she was born. Ros moved to Bristol, when her husband who was in the Air Force was posted to RAF Locking, near Weston Super Mare. Ros trained as a nurse and did much for the NHS Retired Employees Fellowship. She became involved in the Bristol Women’s League through her friendship with Lil Collins. Ros sent us all birthday cards and sent League Letters and personal letters to the who had moved away fromBristol. We have lost a good friend and send our sympathies to Angela and Ian

RAJAH COMMEMORATION DAY

Arnos Vale Cemetery, Bristol 30th September 2018

Rajah Rammohun Roy was a social reformer from Bengal and worked in Law, Theology and Women’s Rights in both India and Britain. A friend of Mary Carpenter, he died in Bristol in 1833. In 1844 his body was moved to Arnos Vale and a little later an Indian style Chattri memorial was built. This was where we met for the yearly commemoration, attended by Brahmos, Bengalis, Unitarians and interested Bristolians.

We were welcomed by the Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Cleo Lake and by Mr Rahul Nangano from the Indian High Commission. Flowers were laid at the tomb and Bengali chants were sung. A service was held in the chapel where Carla Contractor, member of Frenchay chapel and an Arnos Vale trustee talked about what the Rajah has meant to Bristol historically and in the present. A large number of people attended this service.
